How Long Do Aluminum Bike Frames Last

Yesterday I saw aluminum frames fatigue and don't last forever. I'm seeing ten years and bike frame itself is anile enough.

Say I'm riding my wheel nigh 25-thirty miles a week, year circular, and so nigh 1,500 miles per year. At least that'south been pretty consistent the last five years or so. If I got the bike in 2009... 2019 isn't that far away, although I wasn't riding information technology that often at first. It's probably got 7 years on it though like that, 1,500/year 10 7... over 10,000 miles probably.

Dang... I ever thought the bike was the frame and frames terminal forever or a lifetime or more. I gauge I'thou thinking of ancient steel frame bikes people restore.

And so I shouldn't invest too much in my bike if it'due south probably going to dice as a bike frame itself former in the adjacent years. Or I should brand a point to get a bike that matches it closely and so I can reuse parts. (Or step upward to a sturdier touring bicycle...). Ha.. oi.... Another tens years though.... Somewhen the rider will wear out.

And what happens at the end when an aluminum frame is fatigued and dies? A spontaneous, irrecoverable, and unsafe frame crack? A frame collapse?

If I had to judge I was thinking I would either keep repairing it indefinitely or something like the bottom subclass section would habiliment out, so the frame would be worn down either from normal use, maybe a botched lesser bracket repair by me, or perhaps because I didn't maintain something with the bottom bracket, simply nevertheless that information technology's wear and tear eventually wearing down one part like that.

The whole frame ages? Or more than like the seams/welds break downwards outset?

Although I do remember someone (maybe the bike shop guy who sold me information technology or a shop guy who repaired it) saying that the bike would terminal forever if you kept repairing it. It would be the maintenance toll, labor and parts, that determines when you buy a new cycle. But if you lot practise the repairs yourself... Information technology's simply the price of parts. I think it was when I decided to get all in for maintaining this current bike myself and learning how to repair it.

How long would my bike last? And what would it look like at the terminate for how it fails?

Climate-wise, information technology'south getting riding in hot summertime, cold snowy winter, pelting. I don't clean it off much at all. It does stay inside though if I'm non riding it. Liveable room or edifice temperature. Information technology'due south not sitting for 12+ hours a mean solar day outside.
